Ali Rezai can continue where he left off in Afghanistan:
as a skilled worker in trade and industry

Ali Rezai's great passion is electronics. His main aim since he arrived in North Rhine-Westphalia as a refugee in October 2021 was to return to work in this sector. However, Afghanistan has no vocational training system and he had acquired his skills informally.

The young man's enthusiasm for ‘his’ subject is infectious. He had already been offered a place on the language course of the integration programme and completed it successfully when he appeared before the KIM (Municipal Integration Management) case manager, Kirsten Bückers, in Schalksmühle, Märkischer Kreis in March 2022. They discussed the next steps on his path to the labour market. Mr Rezai very quickly understood all this. He prepared for interviews for internships with his KIM case manager. This demonstrated the keen instinct of this likeable young man. He knew how to conduct himself in these types of discussions in his country of origin, what to ask, how to make himself appear interesting. But would this work in Germany? For Ali Rezai, it was very important to learn how to behave ‘correctly’ in such situations.

The lack of school and work references was an exclusion criterion for some companies, while others took a closer look at the candidate for internships and training: How skilful and perceptive was he? How deep was the knowledge he had acquired? How would he integrate into the company's work processes and social interaction?

“We at Novelis quickly noticed how skilfully and decisively Mr Rezai tackled his tasks and are delighted that the Novelis Ohle site has gained such a committed and ambitious junior employee. We are very proud of his academic and practical achievements and look forward to working with him in the future,” says Julia Pasternak from Novelis Human Resources.

Mr Rezai has been pursuing his training as an electronics technician for industrial engineering at Novelis in Plettenberg, Sauerland since August 2023. And what about the vocational college? Ali Rezai learnt a particular German word early on: Herausforderung - Challenge!
